13 g. 8,8-dimethyl-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-5,6,7,8- tetrahydro-lH-imidazo[4,5-g]quinolin-6-one (see Example 30 (i)) were hydrogenated in methanol in the presence of palladium/charcoal. After filtering off the catalyst, the filtrate was evaporated and the residue recrystallised from 2N hydrochloric acid/ethanol (1:1 v/v) to give 7.8 g. of the title compound in the form of its hydrochloride; m.p. 305 -308° C. (decomp.).
