Procedure

To a solution of 7-bromo-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,4-benzothiazine-5carboxylic acid (500 mg) in methanol (80 ml) was added 0.05 M sodium metaperiodate solution (40 ml). The mixture was stirred for 5 hours at room temperature, then diluted with water (500 ml) and concentrated until crystals began to separate. The crystals were collected and dried to give the title compound (300 mg, 57.5% which was recrystallized from ethanol to give pale yellow crystals, mp 254°-255° C. (decompd.).
