Procedure

3.06 g of 1,3-bis(benzylideneamino)-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazole-2-thione in 100 ml of absolute dichloromethane are treated with 1.47 g of trimethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate, the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours and the resulting precipitate is removed by filtration under suction. From the filtrate, there is precipitated by the addition of diethyl ether an additional portion of the desired product which, together with the first portion, is washed once with water, once with cold methanol and three times with diethyl ether and subsequently re-precipitated from acetonitrile/diethyl ether. There is obtained colorless 1,3-bis(benzylideneamino)-2-(methylthio)imidazolium tetrafluoroborate of melting point 215°-220° (decomposition).
