500 mg (1.86 mmol) of N-benzyl-5,6-dimethoxyisoindoline was dissolved in 10 ml of acetone, and 316 mg (2.27 mmol) of methyl iodide was added thereto at room temperature. The mixture was left to stand for 6 hours. Then, the precipitated crystals were collected by filtration and washed with 10 ml of acetone to obtain 640 mg of the above identified compound. The filtrate was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the crystal residue was washed with 10 ml of ethyl acetate to obtain 110 mg of the secondary crystals. The total yield was 750 mg.
