Procedure
To 1-bromo-2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-2-(methoxymethyl)propane (30 g) was added sodium hydroxide (5.6 g) in water (50 cm3). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h and then extracted with diethyl ether. The extracts were dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent removed under reduced pressure (40° C. at 15 mmHg) to give the oxirane (13 g, 70%) as a colourless liquid. No further purification of this material was needed.
