Procedure
2,2-Bis(methoxymethyl)oxirane (13 g) was stirred with a solution of potassium thiocyanate (9.7 g) in water (40 cm3) for 18 h at room temperature. The aqueous layer was then replaced with a fresh solution of potassium thiocyanate (9.7 g) in water (40 cm3) and the mixture stirred for a further 6 h. The bulk of the thiirane was then separated from the aqueous layer which was then extracted with diethyl ether. These extracts were combined with the bulk of the thiirane, the solution dried and the solvent removed (40° C. at 15 mmHg) to give the thiirane (13 g, 90%) as a colourless liquid.
