Methyl 2-methoxy-4-(phenylethynyl)nicotinate (100 mg, 0.37 mmol) is dissolved in 7% NH3 in MeOH (3 mL) and heated at 115° C. in a sealed tube for 24 hours. The reaction mixture is cooled to 0° C. and the cyclized product is crystallized out. The compound is collected by filtration and dried after washing with hexanes. MS m/z 253.1 (M+1).
