Reaction Steps

A solution of tert-butyl 7-methyl-6-oxo-9-phenyl-2,7-diazaspiro[4.4]nonane-2-carboxylate (diastereomer 1, step 1) (488.3 mg, 1.48 mmol) in DCM (10 mL) was treated with TFA (2.3 mL, 29.6 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 hours and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in EtOAc and washed with a saturated sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic portion was dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound which was used in the next step without further purification;
