A solution of 3-(2-Amino-1-pyridin-3-yl-ethyl)-piperidine-1,3-dicarboxylic acid 1-tert-butyl ester 3-ethyl ester (2.5 g, 6.6 mmol) in toluene (21 ml) was heated at reflux overnight. The resulting mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by chromatography on silica eluting with 0-10% MeOH in DCM to afford the individual diastereomers as white solids:
