2-(2-Carboxyethyl)-3-(2-chlorophenyl)-5,7-dimethyl-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester: A solution of 3-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(2-ethoxycarbonylethyl)-5,7-dimethyl-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.1 g, 0.22 mmol) in absolute ethanol (6 mL) is treated with 2M sodium hydroxide solution (12 drops) and the reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 4 days. The solvent is removed under reduced pressure, and the residue is dissolved in water and washed with ethyl acetate. The aqueous layer is acidified to pH2 with concentrated hydrochloric acid and this is extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phases are combined, dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and the solvent is removed under reduced pressure to afford the title compound, which is used without further purification.
