A mixture of 8-nitro-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1-benzazepin-2-one (1.72 g, 8.34 mmol) and N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethylethylenediamine (5.02 mL, 33.3 mmol) in methylene chloride (25 mL) was chilled to −20° C. and iodotrimethylsilane (5.32 g, 26.6 mmol) was added. The mixture became homogeneous and was stirred for 30 min before adding iodine (3.17 g, 12.5 mol). After stirring for 2 h at 0° C., the reaction was quenched with 10% aqueous Na2S2O3 and the mixture was filtered. The solid residue was washed with water (10×5 mL) and then with ether (2×2 mL) to yield 2.345 g of 3-iodo-8-nitro-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-benzo[b]azepin-2-one (contaminated with ˜8% starting material) that was used as such in the next reaction.
