Procedure

2,4-Dinitro-6-(1-methylheptyl)phenol (98.5 percent pure) (252 gm) is dissolved in heptane (225 gm). Benzyldimethylamine (140.8 gm) is added dropwise over 40 minutes, keeping the temperature of the mixture below 40° C., and the mixture is stirred for 15 minutes. Crotonyl chloride (139 gm) is then added dropwise over 30 minutes, keeping the temperature below 60° C., and the mixture is stirred at 60° C. for 30 minutes and cooled to less than 50° C. The mixture is washed twice with water and then cooled to 20° C. The mixture is washed with a mixture of methanol and aqueous sodium hydroxide, with water and methanol, and finally with dilute hydrochloric acid. The organic layer is stripped at 70° C. under vacuum to remove heptane and leave 2,4-dinitro-6-(1-methylheptyl)phenyl crotonate (282.6 gm) as an orange/brown oil.
