A 100 mL 3-necked round bottom flask was charged with pyridine-2,4-diol (9.0 g, 81 mmol) and concentrated H2SO4 (40 mL). To the above solution was added dropwise fuming HNO3 (40 mL) at 0° C. Work-up: the mixture was poured onto crushed ice and chilled in freezer. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with cold water and dried in vacuo, to afford 11.4 g (90%) of the product as a colorless solid.
