A solution of 2.1 g (0.005 mole) of 95% 7-benzyl-1-(4-brombutyl)-3-methylxanthine in 50 mL methanol and 0.21 g of 20% palladium hydroxide on carbon is hydrated at 40° until cessation of hydrogen absorption (˜1.5 hours). The catalyst is filtered out and washed with hot methanol, then the filtrate is evaporated, yielding 1.35 g of 1-(4-brombutyl)-3-methylxanthine (VI, where R═H, R1=Me, n=4).
