1-bromo-4-((methylsulfonyl)methyl)benzene (1.5 g, 6.02 mmol), 1,4-bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)benzene (4.97 g, 15.05 mmol), and silver carbonate (1.826 g, 6.62 mmol) were dissolved in THF (60.2 ml) and sparged with N2 for 15 min. Then Pd(PPh3)4 (0.348 g, 0.301 mmol) was added and the reaction was heated to 80° C. overnight. The reaction was then cooled to rt, filtered through Celite™ and concentrated in vacuo. The resulting residue was purified by column chromatography on a Biotage™ 50 g column by eluting with 5% to 50% EtOAc:Hex to yield the desired product. 1H NMR δ (ppm) 7.83 (d, 2H), 7.69 (d, 2H), 7.64 (d, 2H), 7.54 (d, 2H), 4.46 (s, 2H), 2.89 (s, 3H), 1.4 (12H).
