To a solution of 5,6-dimethyl-8-propyl-3-thia-1,4,7,8a-tetraaza-as-indacene from example 1 (40 mg, 0.16 mmol) in CHCl3 (10 mL) was added Br2 (78 mg, 0.5 mmol), then the solution was stirred at room temperature overnight to give a brown solution. LC-MS showed 30% of the title compound and 35% of 5,6-dimethyl-8-propyl-3-thia-1,4,7,8a-tetraaza-as-indacene. The reaction mixture was diluted with sat. NaHSO3 solution. The aqueous layer was extracted with DCM (3×10 mL). The combined organic layers were dried with Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated.
