To a stirring suspension of 1-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-4-carbonitrile INT-45 (1.2 g, 7.64 mmol) and silica gel (catalytic) in EtOH at 0° C. was added NaBH4 (237.2 mg, 7.64 mmol). The reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 2 h. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and the product was purified by chromatography (EA/hexane) to afford 1.02 g (82%) of 1-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-4-carbonitrile INT-46 as a white solid. LCMS-ESI (m/z) calculated for C10H9NO; 159.2; found 160.1 [M+H]+, tR=2.39 min.
