A solution of 2-(3-chlorobenzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)acetaldehyde (1.100 g, 5.60 mmol) in 10 mL THF was added dropwise (cannula) to an ice-cold solution of the ethynylmagnesium bromide (25 mL, 12.5 mmol, 0.5 M/THF). The reaction was stirred for 1 h at 0° C. and for 1 h at room temperature and then was quenched by addition of 100 mL saturated NH4Cl solution. The resulting mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×) and the combined organic solution was dried (Na2SO4), filtered and evaporated. Purification by flash chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexanes) gave the title compound (475 mg, 65%).
