Procedure

0.17 mol (25 g) of methyl 4-methoxy-acetoacetate and 91 ml 33% dimethylamine in ethanol (about 0.51 mol dimethylamine) were stirred in a pressure reactor for 4 h at 110° C. The reaction mixture was then evaporated to dryness and 27 g of crude product chromatographed over 350 g silica gel with ethyl acetate/methanol 9/1. After drying, 12.4 g of the title compound were obtained.
