Reaction Steps

To a solution of (2R,3S,4S,5R,6S)-3,4,5-tribenzyloxy-6-[3-[(4-benzyloxyphenyl)methyl]-4-chloro-phenyl]-2-(hydroxymethyl)-6-methoxy-tetrahydropyran-2-carbaldehyde 25j (1.04 g, 1.3 mmol) in methanol (20 mL) was added sodium borohydride (98 mg, 2.6 mmol) slowly at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 5 min. The reaction mixture was quenched with saturated aqueous ammonium chloride (15 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (50 mL×2). The combined organic layers were washed with water (30 mL×2) and saturated aqueous sodium chloride (30 mL×2) in turn, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound 25k as yellow oil (1.04 g, 100%). This material was not further purified.
