Reaction Steps
Lithium chloride (1.87 g, 44.1 mmol) was charged into a reaction flask. The flask was evacuated and heated using a heat gun for 10 minutes. The flask was cooled to room temperature and zinc (2.88 g, 44.1 mmol) was added to the flask. The flask was again evacuated and heated using a heat gun for 10 minutes. The flask was cooled to room temperature and THE (80 mL) was syringed into the reaction followed by 1,2-dibromoethane (0.42 mL, 4.90 mmol). This mixture was stirred for 30 minutes in an oil bath set at 60° C. The mixture was cooled to room temperature followed by the addition of chlorotrimethylsilane (0.12 ml, 0.98 mmol) and diiodine (0.25 g, 0.98 mmol) dissolved in 4 mL of THF. The mixture was again stirred for 30 minutes in an oil bath set at 60° C. The mixture was again cooled to room temperature. 1,1,1-trifluoro-4-iodo-2-(trifluoromethyl)butane (7.50 g, 24.5 mmol) was then injected into the reaction mixture via syringe. The heterogeneous reaction mixture was stirred and heated in an oil bath set at 50° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and stirring was stopped. The product was used as is.
