Procedure
The melamine reacts with the formaldehyde to form melamine-formaldehyde co-polymers which precipitate out of the reaction mixture as nano-particle flakes having a size in the region of 10 to 50 nm. The poor solubility of the melamine-formaldehyde co-polymers in the DMSO solvent induces precipitation. The flakes precipitate from the solvent as melamine-formaldehyde nano-particles comprising micropores within the structure of the nanoparticle flakes. As the nanoparticle flakes precipitate, they agglomerate with each other to form micro sized particles. This agglomeration connects the nanoparticle flakes, forming mesoporous within the network of connecting nanoparticles. Hence, the polymeric catalyst can be viewed as a particle having mesopores disposed between melamine-formaldehyde co-polymer nano-particles and wherein micropores extend within the co-polymer nano-particles.
