A stirred solution of N-cyclopropylmethyl-N-propyl-3-oxo-butanamide (scheme 2: (H)) (900 mg, 4.57 mmoles) in chloroform (30 mL) at 0° C. was treated with sulfuryl chloride (1M in methylene chloride, 5.48 mL, 5.48 mmoles). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes and then poured into methylene chloride and washed with 5% sodium bicarbonate solution, brine, and dried over Na2SO4. The solution was concentrated in vacuo and the crude product used without further purification.
