A suspension of ethyl 6-[(acetyloxy)methyl]-4-hydroxy-8-iodo-3-quinolinecarboxylate (0.90 g) and 4-chlorobenzylamine (2.6 mL) is heated at 180° C. for 1 h. The reaction is cooled to room temperature and diluted with Et2O. The resulting solid is filtered and triturated with acetone to yield 0.74 g (73%) of N-(4-chlorobenzyl)-4-hydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)-8-iodo-3-quinolinecarboxamide, m.p. 283-286° C.
