Water (50 mL) was cooled to 10° C. and treated with H2SO4 (3.56 mL, 66.8 mmol) and then allowed to warm to ambient temperature. The solution was treated with 2-[(4-pyridin-2-ylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]-1H-benzimidazole (9.80 g, 33.4 mmol) and then methanol (150 mL). The solids were filtered, washed with methanol (50 mL), and dried under reduced pressure to provide the title compound as a solid. Elemental analysis calc'd for C17H25N5O9S2: C, 40.23; H, 4.96; N, 13.80; S, 12.64; O, 28.37. Found: C, 40.21; H, 5.00; N, 13.81, S, 12.53. DSC: sharp endotherm at 180° C.
