Procedure

To a solution of ethyl 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylate (1.1 g, 2.79 mmol) in MeOH (20 mL), a solution of KOH (2.2 g, 39 mmol) in H2O (20 mL) was added. The mixture was heated at 90° C. for 3 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to rt and the MeOH was evaporated. HCl (1N) was added until a white precipitate formed. The solid was filtered off, and dried under vacuum. The product (1.0 g, 98% yield) was obtained as a white solid: LC-MS m/z 367 (MH+), retention time is 3.43 min (method 1); mp 150-151° C.; 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.24-7.65 (7H, m), 8.26 (1H, s).
