To a solution of 4.0 g. (0.1 mole) of sodium hydroxide in 50 ml. of water, cooled in ice and having nitrogen bubbled therethrough, was added 9.5 g. (0.1 mole) of thiopropionic acid. The reaction mixture was stirred for 5 minutes, after which there was added 13.7 g. of N-acetyl-chloroacetamide in 50 ml. of water. The reaction mixture was heated on a steam bath for 10 minutes, then cooled, filtered, and air dried. The product was washed with ether/hexane (3:1) three times with 150 ml. each washing, and then air dried. The product was recrystallized from water to yield 8.0 g. of white crystals.
