32 g of 3-o-tolyl-hexanoic acid methyl ester obtained from step (b) in 200 ml methanol are boiled under reflux with 9.8 g KOH in 20 ml H2O for 2 hours. Isolation of the acid product yields 3-o-tolyl-hexanoic acid as an oil.
