An acetone solution of 4-acetylamino-5-chloro-2-methoxy-benzoyl chloride (e6) (2.0 g) was added to a stirred aqueous solution of sodium azide (2.0 g) and the suspension stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. Extraction with ethyl acetate gave 4-acetylamino-5-chloro-2-methoxy-benzoyl azide (e7) (4.3 g) as a white crystalline solid on trituration under petrol, m.p. 135°-140°. [I.R.ν (N3)=2140 cm-1 and ν (C=O)=1645, 1705 cm-1 ].
