A suspension of 8.57 g of ethyl m-benzyloxybenzimidate tetrafluoroborate in ethanol (120 ml) was cooled to −70° C. and then treated with liquid ammonia (100 ml). The cooling bath was removed and the reaction mixture stirred for 69 h until the reaction was complete (TLC analysis). The solvent was removed in vacuo to give the desired m-benzyloxybenzamidine tetrafluoroborate as a white solid, mp 125°-127° C., that was essentially pure and used without further purification in the next step.
