Procedure

To a solution of 2-(4-methoxybenzyl)-4-oxo-4-(4-pyridin-4-ylpiperazin-1-yl)butanoic acid methyl ester (3.94 g) in methanol (30 ml) was added 2N sodium hydroxide (12 ml) and the solution was stirred for 6 hours. To the solution was added acetic acid (1.5 ml) and the reaction solution was concentrated. The concentrate was purified by CHP-20 column chromatography (H2O→30% acetonitrile aqueous solution) and recrystallized with acetone to give the titled compound (3.49 g) as a colorless crystal.
