Reaction Steps

To a suspension of 6-hydroxymethyl-4′-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (38.5 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (175 mL) and Et3N (50 mmoles) at 8° C. is added a solution of (CH3SO2)2O (48 mmol) in 50 mL of CH2Cl2 over 10-15 minutes. The reaction mixture is then extracted with cold water, dried over Mg2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under high vacuum nearly to dryness. The residue is treated with ethyl acetate, and the desired product is collected by filtration, washed with ethyl acetate, and dried under vacuum.
