10 g (31.6 mmol) of methyl 6-methyl-3-nitro-2-oxo-4-(phenylmethyl)-1,2-dihydropyridine-1-acetate are placed in a Parr flask and 150 ml of methanol are added. 1 g of 10% palladium on carbon is then introduced and the mixture is hydrogenated at 0.28 MPa (40 psi) at room temperature for 2 hours. The mixture is filtered on celite and the solvent is evaporated to dryness.
