PROCEDURE

4-Methoxy-2-methyl-l(phenylmethyl)-1H-indole-3-acetic acid hydrazide. A solution of 2.8 g (8.3 mmol) of 4-methoxy-2-methyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-1H-indole-3-acetic acid ethyl ester and 10 mL of hydrazine in 40 mL of EtOH was heated to maintain reflux for 16 hours, diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc. The EtOAc solution was washed with NaCl solution, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated at reduced pressure. The residue was crystallized from MeOH to give 2.0 g (75% yield) of 4-methoxy-2-methyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-1H-indole-3-acetic acid hydrazide, mp, 145-147° C.
