Procedure
A mixture of 1 g (3 mmol) of 2-ethyl-4-methoxy-alpha-oxo-1-(phenylmethyl)-1H-indole-3-acetamide and 142 mg (3.75 mmol) of sodium borohydride and 100 mL of ethanol was stirred for 20 hours, and evaporated at reduced pressure. The residue was taken up in ethyl acetate and water, the ethyl acetate separated and washed with brine and dried (MgSO4). The solution was concentrated at reduced pressure and the residue stirred with ether. The insoluble material was filtered to give 893 mg (88%) of 2-ethyl-4-methoxy-alpha-hydroxy-1-(phenylmethyl)-1H-indole-3-acetamide, mp, 160-162° C.
