A solution of 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-(1-methylcarbamoyl-2-naphthalen-2-ylethyl)piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester, 60, (4.4 g, 10 mmol), acetic anhydride (13 mL), pyridine (1 mL) and N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (0.25 g) in dichloromethane (50 mL) is stirred for 1.5 hours. The solution is then extracted with water and 1N HCl. The organic phase is dried, concentrated in vacuo, and the resulting crude product purified over silica gel (EtOAc/hexane 1:3 then 1:1) to afford the desired product.
