A solution of 485 mg of 2,5-anhydro-3,4,6-tris-O-(phenylmethyl)-D-glycero-D-manno-heptitol 1,7-diacetate in 2 ml of ethanol was treated with 183 μl of an ethanolic solution of sodium ethoxide (2.4N). After 1 hour, 150 μl of glacial acetic acid was added and the mixture evaporated. The residue was taken up in ether, washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and brine, dried and evaporated. Flash chromatography, eluting with hexane:ethyl acetate (1:1), gave 290 mg of the desired compound.
