To a stirred solution of 4.07 g of 2-deoxy-2,2-difluoro-4,5,7-tris-O-(phenylmethyl)-D-arabino-3-heptulofuranosonic acid, ethyl ester in 75 ml of ethanol was added 15 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide. After 60 minutes at 25° C., the mixture was acidified with carbon dioxide and concentrated. The residue was stirred with ether and water and acidified with hydrochloric acid. The ether layer was washed with water and brine, dried, and concentrated to give a colorless oil, IR 1770 cm-1 (CF2COOH).
