Procedure

A reaction mixture consisting of 8 parts NaOH in 200 parts H2O and 54.6 parts of 1,3-bis(p-carbomethoxyphenoxybutyl)tetramethyldisiloxane (see Example XII) were combined and heated to reflux. The mixture was initially heterogeneous but became homogeneous after three hours, at which time the reaction was terminated, extracted two times with 100 ml. toluene and acidified with excess HCl. A white precipitate formed, which was filtered and recrystallized from pentane. The structure was confirmed by I.R. and N.M.R.
