Procedure

m-Trifluoromethylbenzoic acid (19.0g, 0.10 mole) and o-methylanisole(12.2g, 0.10 mole) are combined in 50 ml of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and warmed with stirring to 90°C for 4.5 hours. The cooled reaction mixture is then poured into ice water and extracted into ethyl acetate (200 ml) to give, after extraction with 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide 15 g of product (53%), m.p. 56°-59°C, upon removal of the solvent in vacuo.
