Procedure
o-Toluoyl chloride (15.4 g, 0.10 mole) and o-methylanisole (12.2 g, 0.10 mole) are combined in 50 ml of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and warmed with stirring on a steam bath for 2-3 days. The cooled reaction mixture is then poured into water and extracted into benzene, dried (anhydrous MgSO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo to give 7.5 g of product (31%), m.p. 72°-73°C.
