Reaction Steps

0.10 moles of benzyl 3-benzylsulfonyl-5-trifluoromethylbenzoate is refluxed in a 10 percent sulfuric acid solution for 1 hour. The reaction mixture is cooled, made alkaline with sodium hydroxide and extracted with ether. The aqueous phase is acidified and extracted with ether. The ether extracts are dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to give 3-benzylsulfonyl-5-trifluoromethylbenzoic acid, m.p. 184°-185.5°C.
