The ethyl ester of 8-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole-1-carboxylic acid is dissolved in cumene and, after adding 10% palladium-carbon, dehydrogenated as set forth in Example 1(b). After recrystallization from methanol, the ethyl ester of 8-methylcarbazole-1-carboxylic acid is obtained in a 75% yield, m.p. 68° C.
