56.0 g of 1'-benzyl-3-hydroxyspiro[indan-1,3'-pyrrolidine] are stirred at room temperature with 120 cc of pyridine and 120 cc of acetic anhydride for 20 hours. The mixture is then poured on ice, is made alkaline with 2 N caustic soda solution and is extracted thrice with 250 cc amounts of ether. The ether phase is washed with water, dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated by evaporation. 1'-Benzyl-3-acetoxyspiro[indan-1,3'-pyrrolidine] is obtained as light yellow oil, which is used for the next reaction without purification.
