Procedure
The 3-hydroxy-9-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole was prepared by hydrolysis of 9.1 g. of 3-benzoyloxy-9-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole and 1.95 g. of potassium hydroxide in 100 ml. of 50% ethaol using the procedure described in Example 21 for the preparation of 3-hydroxy-6-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole. There was thus otained 48 g. of 3l -hydroxy-9-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole which melted at 104°-106°C.
