3-(Dimethylamino)-6-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole is prepared by dissolving 0.1mole of 3-(dimethylamino)-6-nitro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole (Example 10) in 400 ml. absolute ethyl alcohol and hydrogenating over Raney nickel at about 350 psig and at room temperature until the required amount of hydrogen has reacted. The resulting 3-(dimethylamino)-6-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole can be isolated and purified using conventional procedures.
