(2S,4R)-N-tert-Butoxycarbonyl-4-tert-butyldimethylsiloxyproline methyl ester (5.9 g, 16.5 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (45 ml) and water (11 ml). Then, 2.5N aqueous sodium hydroxide (6.6 ml, 16.5 mmol) was added thereto. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 6 h, and then the organic solvent was distilled off. The aqueous layer was washed with ethyl acetate, then adjusted to pH 2.5 with 1N hydrochloric acid, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride, and concentrated in vacuo to obtain crude (2S,4R)-N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-4-tert-butyldimethylsiloxyproline (5.1 g). ##STR384##
