Procedure

In a 500 ml Schlenk tube was put 0.36 g (0.4 mmol) of Ru2Cl4 ((R)-tol--BINAP)2 (NEt3). After purging with nitrogen, 56.7 g (0.2 mmol) of methyl 4-phenyl-2-chloro-3-oxobutyrate (compound (III)) and 280 ml of methanol were dissolved therein. The solution was charged in a 500 ml autoclave and stirred at room temperature under a hydrogen pressure of 80 atm for 20 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated to give 57.2 g (95%) of the title compound (IV).
