Reaction Steps

7.6g of 4-methoxybenzoic acid was put in a 100 ml two-necked flask and dissolved by the addition of 50 ml of thionyl chloride, the solution was then refluxed at 80° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to an ambient temperature and the precipitate was filtered out. Unreacted thionyl chloride was removed and the obtained product was vacuum distilled (185° C./2 mmHg). The yield was 91% and 1HNMR and IR spectra of the product were as follows.
