Reaction Steps

To 7-methoxy-10,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,f][1,4]thiazepin-11-one (0.5 g, 1.95 mmol) in pyridine (10 ml) was added phosphorus pentasulphide (0.58 g, 0.675 equivalents) and the mixture was heated under reflux for 3.5 hours. The mixture was cooled and the pyridine was removed under reduced pressure, the residue washed with water and recrystallised from methanol to give the title compound as a yellow solid (0.38 g, m.p. 239°-241°, Rf 0.85 [silica, cyclohexane/ethyl acetate (1:1, v/v)].
